Thought of the week
I find behaviour change a fascinating subject, and am enjoying studying it.
Over the years I have tried to make changes and failed way more times than I succeeded. I used to go all in, a.k.a. the all-or-nothing approach.
There are 2 main reasons why we so often fail to create sustainable behaviour change:
1. We take on too much at a time.
If we want to create meaningful, long-term change, we need to start small.
It’s all about breaking down an aspiration into bite-sized chunks.
Do not go for the all-or-nothing approach.
2. We’re too ‘goal-obsessed’.
Instead of focusing on the goal we want to achieve, we should consider the person we want to become (and the processes/systems we need to put in place to get us there).
All-or-nothing approaches seldom work.
What happens is, we rely too heavily on willpower and motivation, and when we miss a day, think we have failed and abandon everything.
To create the right conditions for behaviour change we need to:
Make it easy
Make it obvious
Make it enjoyable
Two great books on this subject are
Tiny Habits - B.J.Fogg
Atomic Habits - James Clear
See you next week!
